VR headsets come in many flavors. Some work with mobile. Some work with PC. The GenBasic Quad HD VR headset works with everything. At least, that’s how it’s designed. It’s a computer in a headset. It comes with its own installed Android OS, but it can also be used with PC or game consoles via its HDMI connection. It’s an interesting and ambitious concept, and of course, comes at a premium price.

Users who watch a lot of movies and just play regular Android games will probably find a lot to love here. Unfortunately, many VR games won’t work. There’s also an issue with HDMI. The latency is terrible. You won’t ever be able to play games on it. It uses a type of “virtual monitor”, so there is some added delay. It should be fine for watching movies, though. But this won’t be replacing your HTC Vive anytime soon. The device is designed to work with HDMI and with its own installed Android OS. It’s basically a standalone VR headset with full button controls. It’s that fact that makes this device so remarkable. It can be used at home and on the go. Unfortunately, the execution was a little off.

Gamers who want a full VR experience should probably look elsewhere, but movie enthusiasts will find a great hybrid system for watching 3D movies on the go and at home with little difficulty.

The design feels nice. The head straps fit comfortably and are fully adjustable. The device is pretty sleek looking and doesn’t really look like a sub-par product. The device sports a lot of interesting features with a microSD slot, HDMI port, and USB port on board.

The headset requires nothing to get started. It comes preloaded with Android 5.1, so you can download games straight away. If you want to use the device to view content on other platforms, you will need an HDMI cable. They also have their own apps and videos that can be used to demo the device. There is an integrated sound system, so you do not need headphones. However, if you’d like to use them, you can.

GenBasic Quad HD VR Headset: Controls & Display

Controls for the device are simple. There are controls for the integrated menu, power, and focus on top of the device. To control the OS itself, you’ll need some kind of Bluetooth controller. This is one of the major downsides to this device since it requires an additional purchase to be able to use it to its fullest.

The display is nice. It’s not the greatest display on the market, but the Quad HD resolution definitely looks nice. It comes with a blue light filter to prevent eye strain during long viewing sessions. It works pretty well.

GenBasic Quad HD VR Headset: Setup

Setup is the same as an Android device. Having a Bluetooth keyboard will help a lot. You’ll need to sign in to your Google account and go from there. There is a modified Android OS installed that comes with proprietary apps and videos to try everything out and is designed for easy navigation without touch controls.

You’ll find Google Play installed to get apps. Without head tracking though, a lot of the Google Cardboard apps are unusable by this device which is a huge shame. It seems to cater more to movie watchers and regular Android gamers than VR gamers, which is a shame and a huge oversight.

To use the headset with HDMI output devices, simple plug and play compatibility is easily achieved.

GenBasic Quad HD VR Headset: User Experience

An anonymous customer praised the device for being easy to use and set up and said it’s great for viewing at night and preventing roommates or partners from waking up. They mentioned sluggish WiFi and a sub-par screen quality though as being large negative points.

Another customer said in their review the video is alright, but it isn’t comparable to the higher end headsets. They also mentioned that the audio quality is terrible and that the product felt rushed.

A third customer loved everything about this headset, mentioning expandable storage, easy fit, good resolution, and basically having its own computer inside as great points. He mentioned, however, it was a bit heavy and could use more padding for comfort.

Bottom Line

Overall, the GenBasic Quad HD VR headset feels like it was overly ambitious and just, unfortunately, fell flat. For the price point, you want something premium, and you get something that looks that way on the outside but falls short on the inside. No sensors is a huge problem for VR gamers, and the screen quality is mediocre at best, even with its high resolution. You’re probably better buying your PlayStation VR or your PC VR device and picking up a cheaper model for use with your smartphone on the go, at least until this product is more refined.
